Human Rights Intern (OHCHR, Nairobi)
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is offering a 6-month internship in Nairobi, Kenya. This is an exciting opportunity for students or recent graduates in law, human rights, international relations, or related fields to gain hands-on experience in monitoring, analyzing, and promoting human rights in East Africa.
About the Role
As a Human Rights Intern, you’ll work with the OHCHR East Africa Multi-Country Office (MCO), supporting efforts to strengthen human rights mechanisms, enhance equality, and combat discrimination. You’ll monitor human rights developments, assist in research and reporting, and support the organization of workshops and events. This role offers a unique chance to contribute to impactful human rights initiatives while gaining valuable experience in a global organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyze human rights developments and trends in East Africa.
- Research and draft internal and external reports on human rights issues.
- Support engagement with UN human rights mechanisms, including Special Procedures and Treaty Bodies.
- Assist in integrating human rights perspectives into national and regional development policies.
- Participate in meetings, take notes, and support the organization of workshops and events.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree in law, human rights, international relations, political science, or a related field.
- Fluency in English (oral and written) is required; knowledge of French or another UN language is an asset.
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
