Intern – Innovation and Smart Cities (UN-Habitat, Nairobi)
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is offering a 6-month hybrid internship in Nairobi, Kenya, focused on innovation and smart cities. This is an exciting opportunity for students or recent graduates to contribute to the development of international guidelines on people-centered smart cities and support global urban innovation initiatives.
About the Role
As an intern, you’ll work with the Innovation Section of UN-Habitat, supporting the organization of key events like the UN-Habitat Assembly and contributing to research, communication, and partnership-building efforts. You’ll gain hands-on experience in urban innovation, smart cities, and sustainable development while working with a global team.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft meeting minutes and support intergovernmental processes for smart city guidelines.
- Conduct research on innovative approaches in urban sectors like housing, mobility, and environment.
- Assist in organizing events, including agenda preparation and logistics.
- Develop communication materials like web articles, infographics, and presentations.
- Support resource mobilization and partnership-building efforts.
- Contribute to the promotion of UN-Habitat’s work for events like the World Urban Forum and World Cities Day.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree in political science, international relations, economics, communications, urban development, or a related field.
- Knowledge of innovation practices in urban contexts is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and design software (e.g., Illustrator) is a plus.
- Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
